Jonah's Mission

​

God commissioned Jonah to deliver a message of repentance to the community of Nineveh.  This was a mission that Jonah did not want to fulfill.  Jonah did not want the Ninevite community to experience the grace and love of God and Jonah knew that God was merciful and that if he preached the message of repentance the Ninevites would repent and God would forgive them.  This angered Jonah and he ran from his mission in defiance and disobedience to God.

Nineveh was longstanding enemies of Israel and dealt treacherous and merciless towards Israel and Jonah knew the history between his country and the Ninevites and did not want the Nineveh people to be restored.  It was not Jonah's place to withhold God's forgiveness and the very forgiveness he did not want the Ninevites to receive, he was in need of himself.  Jonah wanted God to destroy that community of people, when in fact, the way he was acting (disobedience to God), he was a candidate of destruction himself.

Every move Jonah made in disobedience to God, took him further and further away from the Lord.  He boarded a ship in Tarshish which is the opposite direction which God commanded him to go.  He paid the fare to board the ship, he went below deck, he fell asleep, he was tossed down into the sea, he went below the sea, the whale swallowed him, and took him further below sea level until he repented.  All disobedience towards God takes you further and further away from Him.

God's Will always prevail, even in our disobedience, God will have His way!  Jonah preached the eight word message that saved an entire nation from destruction and the people were restored and was given a new beginning with God.



Everyone, no matter what you have done, can experience God's grace and mercy!   Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
